Why is Vitamin-D called a vitamin when it is a hormone?

Vitamin D is actually a pro-hormone, a substance that the body turns into a hormone. Approximately 10% of the Vitamin D the body needs comes from food, the rest comes from the chemical reaction when sunlight hits the skin.
